Munich, a multidimensional city with a lot to offer, from a rich historical background, to interesting places to stroll, the most typical beer gardens, a very rich cultural heritage and even the Bavarian entrepreneurial ecosystem, with innovative start-ups that have seduced investors from all over the world.
Munich, a unique city in the heart of Bavaria, offers much more than you expect.
These are some curiosities of this interesting city.
1. It all started with the monks...
Munich, München in German, comes from the word Mönch which means monk and if it were not for the monks, the capital of Bavaria would not have been founded, since in the twelfth century the Duke of Bavaria allowed the monks to start a market that, apparently, was very successful, and that was extended to create a large city. Such is the influence of the monks that they even appear on the city's coat of arms.
2. Munich, the city where BMW was born
If "you like to drive" as BMW's slogan dictates and cars are your passion, this is your city, Munich is the place where one of the most famous car brands in the world was born: BMW. The brand has its own museum, where you can learn about the history of the company, find some retro models, as well as learn about future projects and the development of the automotive industry in general.
In the museum you will be able to sit in car models that are not yet on the market, a truly extraordinary experience!
3. If I told you... Oktoberfest...
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you say Oktoberfest? Surely it is the most important beer fair in the world because beer is the most traditional and typical drink in Munich.
Munich is also home to the world's largest brewery, the Hofbrauhaus, where Lenin, Hitler and Mozart, among many famous visitors, visited the brewery.
4. Sausages for breakfast
For Bavarians white pork sausages are an unavoidable part of breakfast. Curiously, eating 'Weisswurst' during other meals is a taboo; the reason apparently is that this dish was made fresh every morning and as the best one does not contain preservatives, it cannot keep for long, so it had to be eaten right away.
5. Disney Castle
Walt Disney was on vacation in Bavaria with his wife when he visited Neuschwanstein, a 19th century castle created by the former king of Bavaria. He was so amazed by the magnificent beauty of the structure, that he incorporated it in some movies, such as 'Sleeping Beauty'. A castle that even if you are not a child will not leave you indifferent.
6. Munich is a lot of soccer
Sports enthusiasts associate Munich with the Bayern soccer club, which is the country's most famous and successful soccer club. However, field hockey is also well represented here by EHC Red Bull München. For a true Bavarian spirit attending a soccer or field hockey match is a tradition where tears of disappointment and cheers of enthusiasm can be seen along with the singing of German songs of support.
7. A city without skyscrapers
Munich is definitely not the typical big city, something that characterizes it is that it has no skyscrapers. The reason? they were banned in 2004; any structure over 99 meters is forbidden in Munich. To this day, the tallest building is still Frauenkirche, the church that is the symbol of the city.
8. Munich, the European Silicon Valley.
Munich goes far beyond its very rich cultural heritage, interesting history, exquisite gastronomy and beer along with Oktoberfest,a very different view is its innovative technological ecosystem that attracts not only giants, such as Google, but is also home to innovative start-ups such as FlixBus, the bus company that links 35 countries and more than 2,500 different destinations.
9. Don't let the music stop...classical!
The public transport company has launched a very musical initiative to promote classical music. Two of its subway stations, Goetheplatz and Odeonsplatz become stages where you can listen to pieces by great authors such as Vivaldi and Mozart, a unique form of cultural enrichment!
10. Sunday is for rest
Although in most countries, Sunday is considered a day of rest, in Munich it takes a higher level because it is difficult to find open stores, supermarkets and even many restaurants. Be sure to plan your Sunday well if you don't want to get bored, but don't worry, there are many interesting things you can do, we'll tell you how later.
